    What is Neurosurgery?

Neurosurgery or neurological surgery is a branch of medicine that is concerned with the treatment and diagnosis of disorders that affect the nervous system. Our human body’s nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, etc. When electrodes were placed on the brain and superficial tumors were removed. From ancient days neurosurgeons are performing surgical treatments for head injuries, skull fractures, and spinal injuries later there were many advanced treatments available for any diseases related to the brain.

List of diagnostic tests for nervous system disorder:

Damage to the nervous system is very complicated and difficult to diagnose. They’re very similar symptoms observed hence different tests are done to identify the right procedure to follow in the diagnostic process. The tests for the nervous system include:

    1. Computed tomography scan (CT or CAT Scan)
    2. Electroencephalogram (EEG)
    3. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
    4. Electro diagnostic tests, like Electromyography (EMG)
    5. Positron emission tomography (PET)
    6. Arteriogram
    7. Spinal tap
    8. Evoked Potentials
    9. Myelogram
    10. Neurosonography
    11. Ultrasound

What is the difference between a neurosurgeon vs neurologist?

Neurosurgeons and neurologists have some overlap in the types of patients they take care of, but the main difference is that neurosurgeons treat diseases or disorders for which an underlying structural/anatomical cause can be identified. This usually amounts to something that can be readily identified on MRI or other imaging test and can be fixed with surgery. Neurologists tend to prescribe more medications and manage patients with neurologic disorders for which there is no surgical treatment.

Most patients are in hospital between 3 and 5 days following cranial surgery. Our Doctors will not discharge you home unless you are absolutely safe and at no risk. Sometimes patients might need some time in rehabilitation prior to going home.

If you have surgery there will always be a scar. Our Doctors always minimise the size of the incision and attempt to place the incision in a cosmetically favourable position so that the scar is not obvious. Fortunately the scalp heals very well so scars tend not to be that visible. It is very unusual to have an incision on your face so your facial features should not be afffected.

Most patients will need to have a new MRI scan within 24 hours prior to surgery. This is used as a planning scan and to ensure nothing has changed with your condition before your operation. If you are unable to have an MRI generally a CT scan is sufficient. It is important that you bring all of your previous radiology films with you to hospital.
